Phlebotomy Technician

Phlebotomy Technician

Program Information

Phlebotomy Technicians, or Phlebotomists, are skilled healthcare professionals who collect, transport, handle and process blood and other specimens. This comprehensive Phlebotomy Technician training consists of 160 hours of instruction (60 hours of classroom instruction and a 100-hour hands-on externship in a healthcare facility.) Some of the topics covered in this program include phlebotomy in relation to the healthcare setting, anatomy and physiology in relation to phlebotomy, venipuncture techniques, specimen processing, non-blood specimens, injection control and proper handling techniques.

This training is designed to help prepare students for a career as a phlebotomist. Due to the inherent requirements of the profession, the following minimum abilities are expected of each student: high school diploma or equivalent with at least a 10th grade Math and English (speaking and reading) level; psychomotor skills (eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity) and visual acuity (normal or corrected) sufficient for safe and successful practice of Phlebotomist duties; ability to obtain immunizations and a background screening free of criminal offenses as required by externship location.

Externships are typically scheduled for a 4-5 week period during the latter part of the class, and usually require a 40 hour per week commitment. Students are required to provide their own transportation to and from various externships sites which can be located within a 50 mile radius of Kishwaukee College. Drug testing and a criminal background check may be required for externship placement, licensure or employment.

Students may wish to contact various healthcare care facilities to find out more about the job market in their area. This is a noncredit training. Federal and State financial aid do not apply to noncredit trainings, however, Kishwaukee College offers a payment plan option. Students must be at least age 18 to register. There is a payment plan available.

There will be a INFORMATION SESSION on January 8, 2019 (6-7pm) in Room C1209 for anyone who is interested in the program and would like additional information and the opportunity to ask questions before registering for the program.
