Disability Services

• Complete the Disability Services Intake Form
• Submit documentation of your disability either by email or in-person
• Schedule an intake meeting with Disability Services at 815-825-2931 or by email at ds@kish.edu

• Receive an official Letter of Accommodation — use Clockwork to view and request your letters
• Submit your Letters and have a conversation with your instructor(s) about your accommodations
• Accommodations are reviewed and updated as needed

Documentation should include a diagnosis and describe how the disability impacts learning or testing. Disability Services can help if you’re unsure what to submit.

• After receiving your Letter of Accommodation, request paperwork from your instructor(s) when you need to test
• Schedule exams with either Disability Serivces or Testing Services — be sure to request your approved testing accommodations
• Bring your photo ID to your testing appointment

• Accommodations may include extended time, reduced-distraction rooms, or assistive technology
• Exams are administered according to instructor guidelines

Students experiencing pregnancy-related conditions are eligible for reasonable accommodations under Title IX to ensure they are not disadvantaged in their coursework.

To request accommodations:

• Submit the Disability Services Intake Form with documentation of your pregnancy related condition
• Disability Services will follow up to schedule an intake appointment
• Together, you’ll review how your condition impacts classes and identify support options

Lactating students have the right to reasonable breaks and access to private space for expressing breast milk.

A service animal (no certification required) is defined as a dog or miniature horse individually trained to perform work or tasks for a person with a disability. The task must be directly related to the individual’s disability.

Illinois statute also recognizes service animals in training.

Emotional support animals, comfort animals, and therapy dogs are not considered service animals under ADA Titles II and III and are generally not permitted on campus.

Students requesting approval for a non-service animal must meet with the Director of Disability and Testing Services before bringing the animal to campus.

Service animals are allowed in public areas of campus where the handler is permitted.

Animals may be restricted from certain areas if safety concerns exist.

College personnel should allow service animals and handlers access to campus spaces, events, and activities.

If it is not obvious that the animal is a service animal, personnel may only ask:

• Is the animal required because of a disability?
• What work or task has the animal been trained to perform?

Service animals are working animals.

Please:

• Do not pet, feed, or distract a service animal
• Do not separate a service animal from its handler

Handlers are responsible for ensuring their service animal:

• Remains under control at all times
• Is leashed, tethered, or harnessed unless this interferes with the animal’s task or the handler’s disability prevents it
• Does not pose a threat or disruption
• Is housebroken and properly cleaned up after
• Meets all legal requirements for public presence (vaccinations, licensing, ID tags)
• Does not obstruct the learning or working environment

Handlers are also responsible for:

• Any damage or injury caused by the animal
• Removing the animal if it becomes disruptive or a safety concern

If an animal must be restricted from an area, Disability Services will assist with alternative accommodations.

Anyone who disagrees with a College decision regarding a service or emotional support animal may file a Section 504 grievance.

Campus visitors that are not current students or employees may attend any event or service being offered by Kishwaukee College with their service animal. Visitors that would like additional information should contact Disability Services at 815-825-2931 or ds@kish.edu.

Kishwaukee College complies with the American’s with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 states “No otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the United States shall, solely by reason of his or her disability, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.”

Title II of the Americans with Disability Act of 1990 states “Subject to the provisions of this title, no qualified individual with a disability shall by reason of such disability, be excluded from participation in or be denied the benefits of the services, programs, or activities of a public entity, or be subjected to discrimination by such entity.”
