TRIO Upward Bound is a free, federally funded college preparation program that supports students at DeKalb High School. The program provides academic support, college planning, and motivation to help students graduate high school and succeed in college.
Kishwaukee College’s Upward Bound program serves eligible students who may need additional support to prepare for college after graduation..

Program Details & Eligibility
Because TRIO Upward Bound is 100% federally funded, students must meet eligibility requirements to participate.
Eligibility criteria:
- First-generation college student (neither parent/guardian earned a bachelor’s degree) OR
- Meet federal low-income guidelines
- Demonstrate a need for academic support to prepare for college
Students must also:
- Be enrolled at DeKalb High School
- Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or legally present with intent to remain
- Plan to attend college immediately after high school
Upward Bound offers year-round academic, college, and career support.
Academic Preparation
- Tutoring and homework help
- College preparatory workshops
- 6-week Summer Academy on Kishwaukee’s campus
- Summer Bridge Program after high school graduation
Educational & Career Planning
- Academic advising
- Organization, time management, and life skills workshops
- College visits and cultural enrichment activities
College Admissions & Financial Aid
- ACT, PSAT, and SAT preparation
- Help with college applications
- Help with scholarships and financial aid forms
Upward Bound is completely free for eligible students.
Students are expected to commit time, effort, and active participation.
Up to 60 students are selected to receive individualized support each year.

Admission criteria:
- Recommendation from at least two DeKalb High School staff members
- Completion of application and interview (student and parent/guardian)
- Commitment to attend program activities
Program expectations:
- Participation during the school year and Summer Academy
- Attendance at scheduled Saturday sessions
- Preference given to students who remain through high school graduation
Upward Bound offers structured tutoring and study time throughout the academic year.
Options include:
- In-person study labs
- Tuesdays & Thursdays, 3–4:30 pm
- DeKalb High School Media Center
- One-on-one or group tutoring (by request)
- Virtual study labs (by request)
